Our Connection
Truchard Vineyard was established in the early 70s by the pioneering Carneros grower Tony Truchard, who championed the region considered by many in the early days of the industry as too cool for growing grapes. John Williams first approached Truchard in 1985 and began sourcing Chardonnay from a hillside block planted in 1979. In point of fact Frog’s Leap purchased the very first crop taken from this block and the winery has been buying the fruit born of the steep slopes of decomposed shale and sandstone ever since.
The winemaking style of our Chardonnay has evolved over time in part to pay homage to this deeply California specific site and our relationship with the Truchard family one of our most revered farming connections.

Cooling winds, fog and mist from the nearby San Pablo Bay drift through the vineyard, settling in the lower elevations.
John Williams has been tending this vineyard so long, he likes to say he knows each vine by name. Pictured here collecting grapes samples as harvest approaches.
